Message With a used Jspec engine, You are false to ass(U)me the cam timing is fine because you have no idea on the history.
Brand new engines do fail and can go back to the factory with very low miles...... Especially early cars that had valve problems.
The way to test a converter for lock up is to have a accurate tach......Go out and do a 3rd gear pull to 6000 RPM
and check your MPH.....take the tire size and the final drive gear ratio and do the math to find out if the converter is slipping.

Other things trans related that can rob power have to do with how a trans is modified to hold more power.
What some trans shop do is put stiffer springs in the front pump and cause the pump pressure to go through the roof to try and get the trans to hold together. If the pressure is too high for the power of the car it will cause the trans to rob more power than it needs to.
The front trans pump robs power , Just like tuning on your A/C. The higher the pressure the more power it robs.
Many things can be done to the trans .......The upgrades need to work together.......valve body, Servos, Pump , Friction Material, Grinding the drum down to fit more friction plates, Removing spacers to fit more friction plates, Ect, Ect.........
You only need a certain pump pressure for a given HP, And less pressure is needed if the trans is built properly in the rest of the areas that can be upgraded.
Since you have a Auto Trans , My first bet is your problem lies there.
